Missionaries often talk about Jonah, and so we think that Jonah is a book about missions. In way, Jonah is about missions because Jonah does go on a missionary trip of a sort. And he does tell the people of Nineveh the message that God wants them to hear. So the book of Jonah is a story about Missions, but not in the way that most of us think.

This small volume of poetry brings the Old Testament book of Jonah alive and makes the profound message vividly clear. Insightful and often funny, the poems make more sense of Jonah than any sermon or commentary I've encountered.

It is an extraordinary exposition and a delightful read, and I'm not usually a fan of poetry/5(8). You. Jonah. book. Read reviews from world’s largest community for readers/5. Watch our overview video on the book of Jonah, which breaks down the literary design of the book and its flow of thought.

I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents. After going through the Jonah Picture Hebrew book, I have a greater sense of the interaction between the prophet Jonah and God.

Jonah learned this important lesson the hard way when he disobeyed God. An overview of the Book of Jonah leads one to determine two prominent sections, namely, “Jonah’s abortive voyage to Tarshish (Jon 1–2) and Jonah’s journey to Nineveh.” 18 Hastily avoiding his commission from the Lord God, Jonah, in the first section, devises a journey to Tarshish.

The book is replete with irony, wherein much of its humor lies. The name “Jonah” means “dove” in Hebrew, but Jonah’s character is anything but dove-like. Jonah is commanded to go east to Nineveh but flees toward the westernmost possible point, only to be swallowed by a great fish and dumped back at this starting point (, 11).

"The Book of Jonah" seems like Christian bookstore fiction with cool, edgy sex and is a bummer because the concept of a modern day retelling of Jonah fascinated me.

However, after setting aside the clumsy, uneven way the book tried to echo the biblical story, I attempted to read the novel on its own terms: young high flyer /5. Jonah’s reluctance to bring that message mirrors the Israelites’ equally stubborn disinterest in the relation of the Assyrians to God. 13 Instead, the men did their best to row back to land.
